Signs Your Commercial Fridge Needs Repair

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Most commercial refrigeration failures do not happen without warning. There are usually signs that something is wrong before a unit fails completely. Catching these early means the repair is simpler, cheaper, and can be scheduled rather than treated as an emergency.

Temperature Problems

Running too warm. If your unit is struggling to hold temperature — particularly during busy periods or on warm days — it is a sign of condenser issues, refrigerant loss, or a failing compressor. Do not ignore it. A unit that is 2 to 3 degrees above target is at risk of failing completely, often at the worst possible time.

Temperature fluctuating. Inconsistent temperatures that swing up and down indicate thermostat faults, sensor failure, or intermittent electrical issues. All are repairable but will worsen if left.

Freezing inside a fridge. Ice forming in the main compartment of a fridge indicates a defrost system fault or a thermostat running too cold.

Noise

Commercial refrigeration should run quietly. Any of the following noises warrant a callout:

• Loud or unusual compressor noise — rattling, banging, or grinding
• Fan noise — squealing, grinding or intermittent stopping
• Hissing — can indicate a refrigerant leak
• Clicking at startup — often a relay or electrical fault

Physical Signs

• Ice buildup on evaporator coils — defrost system failure
• Water pooling around or under the unit — blocked drain
• Condensation inside the unit — door seal failure
• Warm patches on door seals — seal is no longer insulating correctly
• Visible damage to door gaskets — cracking, peeling or deformation

Operational Signs

• Compressor running constantly without cycling off — overloaded compressor, often due to dirty condenser
• Unit not starting — electrical or compressor fault
• Display showing error codes — control board faults or sensor failures
• Unusually high energy bills — an inefficient refrigeration unit uses significantly more power

When to Call Us Immediately

Some faults cannot wait. Call us immediately if:

• Temperature has risen above the safe range for your product (above 5°C for chilled, above -15°C for frozen)
• You can smell burning from the unit
• The unit has stopped working completely
• You suspect a refrigerant leak
